  17. <p>    Baseball has its amazing mysteries: sacrifice flies,
  18. biorhythmic batting slumps, perfect games -- and Orel Hershiser
  19. IV. Hershiser, at least, can explain himself. The Dodger
  20. pitching sensation does just that in Out of the Blue, his
  21. best-selling memoir of the 1988 baseball season. Says he:
  22. "Admittedly I have a funny name, in a baseball uniform I appear
  23. to have no chest, and my long arms and legs don't evidence my
  24. strength." Success, he says, stems in part from the mysteries
  25. of faith. "Being a Christian is no excuse for mediocrity." The
  26. Bible, after all, is a best seller too.
